The management of China’s The Time Weekly Newspaper visited the Eleven Media Group in Yangon on 8 May 2012. During their visit, Mr. Yin Hongwei, the Chief Reporter and the Associate Professor at the Journalism and Communications Department of the Southwest China University of Political Science, conducted an interview with Chairman and CEO Dr. Than Htut Aung of the Eleven Media Group.

After his interview, the Chief Reporter called on questions about Chinese government. The followings are the queries of EMG’s CEO.

Dr. Than Htut Aung: You have already known the momentous and speedy changes in Myanmar. We have also learnt that the suspension of Myitsone Dam Project came as a shock to the Chinese Government. The relation between the two countries would not be in exactly the same way compared with that of previous military government. At this juncture, I would like to know the view of Chinese government on this changing trend.

Mr. Yin Hongwei: I am of the view as a journalist that Chinese government is preparing to adjust the policy of Sino-Myanmar relation as the rapid changes are occurring in this country within one year.

Dr. Than Htut Aung: You told me that it worries some persons that the suspension of Myitsone Dam Project would lead to a halt in Chinese investments in Myanmar. I’ m also of the view that if Chinese Government decides to stop this project, a new face of bilateral relation would usher in a new era in Myanmar-Sino relation. Is it possible for Chinese Government to do so?

Mr. Yin Hongwei: Some Chinese government officials and educated Chinese people assume that this project should be halted. However, CPI Company is still persuading Myanmar government to resume the project. And they are also thinking to organize the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). However, Chinese government considers this decision will lead to better relations between Myanmar and western countries.

Dr. Than Htut Aung: It is totally wrong. The Ayeyawady River is the heart and lifeblood of our country. No one can assess the value of this giant river. If CPI Company continues the Myitsone Dam Project, unexpected and regretful consequences would turn out in the country. Therefore, we asked for the suspension of this project. By the way, you mentioned that Chinese government can help the ethnic affairs in Myanmar. If so, is it not possible for your government to persuade KIA to come to peace-talks?

Mr. Yin Hongwei: I’ll report this idea to the responsible persons. In fact, China is a friend of Myanmar.

Dr. Than Htut Aung: Most of the Myanmar people are living at poverty line. Therefore, we welcome Chinese investors who are not extremely greedy and who can observe business ethics. Here I want to point out the ‘corruption’ cases which are the most serious setback in the investment processes in Myanmar. So I would like to know whether Chinese government and media are willing to cooperate with Myanmar counterparts in fighting against corruption cases in business processes.

Mr. Yin Hongwei: I will also report this issue to the responsible persons. Chinese media are now making efforts in fighting against frauds and dishonesties in business sector. We want to expand relations between the two countries, as well as between the Eleven Media Group and our media.
